A Child and Family Investigator (CFI) is a court-appointed neutral third party in domestic relations cases who investigates family dynamics, interviews parents and children, and makes evidence-based recommendations to the court regarding parenting time and decision-making, focusing solely on the child’s best interests. CFIs are trained professionals who conduct brief, focused investigations, including home visits, to provide judicial officers with in-depth information beyond what’s typically presented, helping resolve disputes over child custody matters. In Colorado, a qualified CFI may be ordered to investigate and opine whether domestic violence or child abuse exists as part of the legal proceeding.
