What is a Child and Family Investigator in Colorado?
A Child and Family Investigator (CFI) is a court-appointed neutral third party in domestic relations cases who investigates family dynamics, interviews parents and children, and makes evidence-based recommendations to the court regarding parenting time and decision-making, focusing solely on the child’s best interests. CFIs are trained professionals who conduct brief, focused investigations, including home visits, to provide judicial officers with in-depth information beyond what’s typically presented, helping resolve disputes over child custody matters. In Colorado, a qualified CFI may be ordered to investigate and opine whether domestic violence or child abuse exists as part of the legal proceeding. A CFI can be appointed in a pre-decree or post-decree domestic relations case.
What can I expect during the CFI Process?

- Meeting with each child in person, if possible
- Home visit to each parent’s home in person, if possible
- Consulting with extended family and friends
- Consulting with teachers, doctors, dentists and other professionals
- Reviewing any relevant paperwork, including past Court Orders
- Reviewing documentation provided by the parents, including digital media
- Criminal background check of all relevant parties
